About Us
Our Story
The Indigenous Tasmanians Aboriginal Corporation (ITAC) was established to support the housing and community needs of Aboriginal people across Tasmania. Born from community vision and leadership, it was incorporated on the 6th of September 1988. ITAC is guided by the principle that strong, culturally connected communities are the foundation for a thriving future.
Our organisation was created to give Aboriginal people greater control over housing and community development. We recognise that housing is more than just a place to live — it’s the foundation so families can grow, their culture is nurtured, and communities flourish. Through culturally grounded programs and partnerships, ITAC works to improve housing access, strengthen community wellbeing, and promote self-determination for all Aboriginal people.
Our Purpose
ITAC’s purpose is to provide culturally safe housing, build strong communities, and create opportunities for Aboriginal people in Tasmania. We focus on delivering services and initiatives that are led by community, for community.
We work to:
Provide safe, secure, and affordable housing for Aboriginal people.
Deliver community programs that support health, wellbeing, and cultural connection.
Advocate for Aboriginal voices to be heard in housing, policy, and community planning.
Create opportunities for education, employment, and enterprise.
Build partnerships that deliver real, long-term benefits to our communities.
Our Values
Our values reflect who we are and what we aim to achieve:
Culture First – Culture guides everything we do. We respect and celebrate all mob’s identity, knowledge, and traditions.
Community-Led – We listen to and are led by the communities we serve. Our programs reflect community priorities and aspirations.
Respect and Responsibility – We foster strong, respectful relationships between tenants, staff, and partners.
Sustainability – We are building programs and housing that support long-term community strength.
Advocacy and Voice – We speak up for our mob and work to create systems that are fair, inclusive, and culturally safe.
